Nigel: A World in a Box

I was born in Chi-Raq
I defeated Mario and Luigi
I ran the speed of light till the ball reach the net
No water for a decade
But I drink from the lake of motivation
I am strong

I sit on the mountain peak slaying Godzilla with my dull sword and keen senses
I live with the wild Avatars
Roaming the skyscrapers through the Luminous night
My Superior qualities help me give correct directions
like the internet and the GPS
I am a warrior

I've mastered the great grueling games
for the Earth praises
Cuz I'm the players and the fans
I taught Picasso how to sketch
I created agriculture and you're just riding my rollercoaster
The world revolves around me
I caused the sands of time to pass
As I built the great wall of China, my small achievement
I am genius

I mean...I’m...impractical

Like the universe

  4. I like the last part because it really hits the ego trippin' theme. I also like the alliteration at the part "great grueling games"

    1. I never said it was deep, but I just like how he incorporated things that were meaningful to him (I.E the video games and TV shows)

    2. I know you never said it, but I'm curious.

  5. I really like ego-trippin poems. I like how he incorporated the fact that he plays video games, and he likes some tv shows. It gives the reader insight on who he is.

  7. I really liked how it was not too long and not too short, but still full of meaning. I really liked the line "No water for a decade but I drink from the lake of motivation" that was really powerful to me.

    1. Why did this feel powerful, what is your connection to this part of the poem

  8. I loved how you connected all sorts of different things, from Mario and Luigi, to Godzilla, to the Roller coaster of life. I also thought you did a great job putting yourself in the spotlight by using several metaphors.

  9. I liked how you referenced to games " I defeated Mario and Luigi I ran the speed of light till the ball reach the net

  11. Great Job Nigel,

I think it was cool how you made everything especially the "I taught Picasso how to sketch I created agriculture and you're just riding my roller coaster". I think is was interesting how you were always saying you are the best and constantly reminding us how you're great. I also liked the ending, how you made it known that the image you drew of yourself was impractical. Well done!

  12. I like how his poem was very creative and it also gave me alot of images to think about especially when he said that he slayed Godzilla with a dull sword and with his keen senses.

  13. You imagine yourself as someone so big with "small achievements". It's like irony at the same time. Your reference to picasso was very good because he's a very good artist and it shows that you have shown self importance throughout the entirety of the poem. I like the humor in the poem as well. Good job nigel!

    1. Going off the "Small achievements", I feel like your saying that you have all of these achievements that make you great.

  14. I like how you bought cartoon characters to life. The rhyme scheme was good. I also like how each stanza is described different but still giving the same message.

  15. Caleb Saulsberry; You had a really strong sense of hyperbole. I like how you said you you beat Mario and Luigi, and slayed Godzilla with a dull sword. I really liked your third stanza. You talked about world revolving around you how you built the great wall of China. You are very creative but simple at the same time. I also liked your ending. You went with the same type of ending Giovani did. You also ended with a metaphor.

  16. the part i liked was when you began to talk about your self in a confident way for ex. i defeated Mario and Luigi, also how you summed up the end of each stanza with a line which tells us what you mean by the stanza

  17. I like how you created the impression that you are so great at things that you outshine those that are known for what they do best even though those people are only busy doing one thing.

  18. I like the line when he has when he says "I created agriculture and you're just riding my roller coaster". Its like a poem that when you start you have the keep finishing it because its so good. You are talking about different animated figures like Mario and Luigi and it makes me understand how confident you are in yourself and saying how smart you are. I like the different figurative languages you used throughout the poem.

  19. i liked how he connected so many things that made him one, made he the person today.this poem was really powerful. people from Chicago have a titled mostly black people but like i was saying, like they can do nothing that place is bad but if it wasn't for Chicago he wouldn't be the person he is today.

  21. As someone who grew up with Super Mario Bros, you had me from go...your lyricism is tight and you ego trip in some fresh and innovative ways. the Great Wall of China is your small achievement...love that line. Drinking from the lake of motivation is nicely crafted as well.

Your poetry always surprises me because although you are a man of few words, your work across the poetry unit showcases your ability to make the words count.

I created agriculture and you're just riding my roller coaster...I'm so intrigued by this line and what you meant.

This poem captures the spirit of Nikki Giovanni for sure...thanks for using words to open the box of your world to me.

  22. I'm getting the sense as If in the beginning your saying how you went from little things such as beating animated characters into becoming a person larger then life. I like how in the beginning you said "I defeat Mario and Luigi" giving me the sense of you saying you control the game (Because in the game, as the player you can't beat them). Some of the lines such as "I taught Picasso how to sketch" and "I built the great wall of China" really help me emphasize the overall meaning of this poem and how your larger then life.

    Great Job!

  23. I like how you said that you taught Picasso how to sketch, and comparing the universe to you, not the other way around. I also noticed that instead of saying a basic word like bright, you said Luminous, and you made yourself seem like a legend, like how you said, you're a warrior, a genius, powerful, and compared yourself to the universe.
