Jenna's Poem: Untitled

I remember the day the whole city was red,
The Alcohol was heavy, the cars were beepin’
When the puck went to Saad, to Richards then to Kane,
Then straight to the back of the net.
The horns went roaring and the gloves went soaring,
The TV screaming “3 times, 6 years”

The South Siders who were sure the Cubs would lose said,
“Congrats that was well deserved”.
Tears were falling on the streets that my mom's father once said
“Honey, they’re never gonna win” but she stayed optimistic and within decades he got the phone call “look, they finally won”.

It had just turned 2017 when my dad got the call from his boss.
The first shot just hours after 12:00 AM.
A gun that was dark as the mind of the shooter.
“It’s Chicago, what do you expect?”
My dad walked out and slammed the door.
Those words hurt, as a bullet shot through me.
I asked if Chicago was really dangerous.
The next day, it was as almost as Wrigley Field heard my command.

We were almost victorious
The scent of alcohol was heavy,
The cars were beepin’
People were cheerin’
And after 108 years I finally heard
“The Cubs are World Series Champs!”
The streets weren’t filled with cars, ambulances, and police,
But with Chicagoans from all generations.

  5. I thought that you did a great job expressing several sports into your life. Also by going back not only into your life but into your parents lives.

  6. I liked your poem, it was very unique and different. You at first talked about how people said that the Cubs wouldn't win but in the end they did. Its different because nobody would think of something like this but you went out of the box. Your figurative language is good

  8. I love how she made Chicago seem, at least for that one day we celebrated the cubs winning, that Chicago was not crime ridden.

  9. You really touched some of the main events in Chicago that not only touched the city but people around the world. Explaining the nights of the great events that happened really made this poem stand out.

I liked how your poem was very real. It showed how no matter how violent Chicago is, the cubs were able to keep us together. You had some very interesting imagery, glad you shared.

  14. You are a huge cubs fan everyone should know and with the poem it only emphasizes the importance of the cubs to you and your family. You also talk a little about the violence in Chicago to how it was the day the cubs won the streets were only filled up with happy Chicagoans. Nice reference to the players for both hockey and baseball.

    Nice job Jenna !!!!!

  16. I liked how you had plenty of quotation marks and conversations throughout the poem. It really gives a unique design to poem. I liked the similes and the bits of exaggeration as well. I think you could have more personification for when the cars were beeping.

  17. I liked how you kept going back to the same phrases, "The cars were beepin’ People were cheerin’" This was a nice touch. I also liked how you made rhymes and they still flowed with the poem and did not sound forced. This was a really well-thought out poem and I enjoyed it a lot.

  18. This poem makes me feel like you remember the EXACT hour of when the Cubs won the world series. People in restaurants at midnight celebrating the Cubs winning the world series. I like how you went from the bad things of Chicago, like shooting, to the things people appreciate in Chicago.

  19. Caleb Saulsberry; I liked how you talked about the Cubs winning the championship after 108 years and the Black hawks winning. I liked your use of rhyme in parts of the poem. I also didn't know your dad was a doctor.

  21. As a life-long Cubs fan, there's special place in my heart for this poem..I was wondering about the third stanza and appreciate the additional context you provided in sharing that your dad was a trauma surgeon. As you know, I was in Cleveland the night the Cubs clinched the World Series, so I missed how Chicagoans experienced this historic event.

I remember it was you and me who kept the faith during that final series...we were representing with our Cubs gear every day. It totally makes sense why you chose this topic for your poem bout a place called home...Well done.

I also appreciate the repetition of the first stanza at the end....stylistically, it was on point and showcased the journey of your growth as a poet.
